How Technology Helps You Become A Lucid Dreamer.

You've heard about lucid dreaming and you're sure that it is something you want to try. However, you are at a loss as to how one becomes a lucid dreamer.

You may have heard that there are benefits to being a lucid dreamer. This is the case, but to get a clearer picture of what these benefits are, you need to take a look at what usually happens when you go to sleep.

Normally, you lay down and you're out for six to eight hours. Maybe you remember your dreams, maybe not. The usual – not all that interesting, really.

The sleep we normally have fulfills the purpose of allowing us to rest up for the next day. However, what would it be like if you were able to control your dreams? Instead of being a spectator to your dreams, what if you could be an active participant?

What if there was a way to become a full participant in your dreams? Lead them in the manner in which you alone determine consciously? That my friend is basically what a lucid dreamer does. They control all aspects of their dreams, going where they will and doing whatever they want in the confines of the dream state.

This sounds great, but how can you become a lucid dreamer? There are two ways to reach this state – one is by having a DLID, or dream initiated lucid dream. These are instances where the dreamer has taught themselves to recognize that they are having a dream and start to assert control over the direction of their dream.

The other method is by having a wake initiated lucid dream (or WILD) this is where the dreamer transitions from a state of wakefulness to lucid dreaming without a sensation of falling asleep. The dreamer simply goes straight from being awake to lucid dreaming.

Now that we know the basic how, what are the fine points to entering either one of these lucid dream realms?

Dream Recall

The easiest place to begin your lucid dream search is in dreams you have already had. When you can remember your dreams, you will be able to recognize when you have that dream again. Many times, we will have the same dream or part of a dream over and over.

Keep a record of your dreams. You may not remember much at first but write down any details regardless of how trivial. You will begin to remember more and more as time goes on. Do this as soon as you wake up when your dreams are still fresh in your mind, otherwise you will forget as the day goes by.

Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD)

This technique was developed by Dr. Stephen LaBerge, one of the lead scientists in the field of lucid dreaming. To use this method, just tell yourself about an object or element that you will remember. When you dream, there's a good chance you'll see this element, then realize that you're dreaming.

Wake-Back-to-Bed (WBTB)

In this technique, you sleep and set your alarm for only a few hours from the time that you go to bed. Upon awakening, don't go right back to sleep – stay awake for about an hour, then go back to bed.

According to Dr. LaBerge, this technique has a success rate of about sixty percent. That's because you've awakened in the middle of the sleep process, while you're still in the middle of an REM cycle and not completely aware. It's like telling your mind that you're interested in lucid dreaming.

Cycle Adjustment Technique

Created by Daniel Love, this method involves setting an alarm to wake you one and a half hours before your normal wake-up time. Once you get used to this early time, alternate your alarm between a normal time and the early one. When your alarm is set to wake you normally, you'll find your body's already ready to wake up early. That makes it more likely that you'll wake up in your dream, and dream lucidly.

Wake Initiation of Lucid Dreams or WILD

As described earlier wake initiated lucid dreams are matter of keeping your mind conscious as you fall asleep. This may be the most fun way to achieve lucid dream state. Imagine if you will that, your dreams are like a movie you are planning to watch. You get comfortable, turn on the television set, (sleep), first you have a dark screen (eyes closed) and now it is a matter of getting through the previews to the movie.

You can also use this technique with tactics like counting, chanting or imagining yourself climbing stairs as you go to sleep. This method of achieving lucid dreaming is best done in the afternoon or other times when you are not terribly tired.

In recent years, the advance of technology has brought us new devices to help us dream lucidly. These include strobe lights, dreaming masks, and other gadgets thought to assist with lucid dreaming.

Possibly the best method of all is to play binaural sound frequencies on headphones.

Binaural beats induce lucid dreaming by causing the hemispheres of your brain to work synchronously, making your brainwaves shift to the frequency required for lucid dreaming.

Keep telling yourself to remember your dreams and be aware when you are dreaming. Do the self hypnosis technique often. Before long you will be experiencing lucid dreams.
