How Do You Become A Lucid Dreamer?


You've heard about lucid dreaming and you're sure that it is something you want to try. However, you are at a loss as to how one becomes a lucid dreamer.

You need to know why it is that you want to be a lucid dreamer. Are there benefits to be gained through lucid dreaming? There are, but to understand them we should first start by examining normal sleep.

Sleep itself is not so interesting; you get ready for bed, lie down and close your eyes. Then you may have uncontrolled dreams or not and several hours later you awaken.

This kind of sleep allows us to get the rest we need to go about our activities the following day. Have you ever wondered, though, what it would be like if you could actually take control of your dreams and dictate their events?

Would you like to stop just being a passive observer and make sure your dreams are whatever you want them to be? That's what being a lucid dreamer is all about. You're totally in control of your dreams, and able to explore new worlds that aren't bound to the real world's laws.

If you want to become a lucid dreamer, how do you manage it? There are two main ways. The first is what's called a dream initiated lucid dream, or DILD. That's when the dreamer realizes they're dreaming in the middle of a dream, restoring their consciousness without leaving the dreaming state itself.

The other method is by having a wake initiated lucid dream (or WILD) this is where the dreamer transitions from a state of wakefulness to lucid dreaming without a sensation of falling asleep. The dreamer simply goes straight from being awake to lucid dreaming.

So how are these types of lucid dreaming induced?

Dream Recall

You will need to learn how to remember your dreams if you want to be able to have lucid dreams. It is referred to as dream recall, the ability to remember your dreams. If you can remember your dreams you are more likely to realize when you are dreaming because many of the dreams you have will be the same or almost the same.

Keeping a dream journal is the best way to learn this skill. A dream journal is for writing down anything which you can remember about your dreams for future reference. You should do this immediately after waking up; the longer you wait, the harder it will be to recall.

Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD)

Developed by renowned lucid dream researcher Dr. Stephen LaBerge, this technique works by telling yourself to recognize a certain object or situation when you see it in your dreams. When you see this object, it triggers the realization that you are in a dreaming, allowing you to begin lucid dreaming.

Wake-Back-to-Bed (WBTB)

To use this process, go to sleep with an alarm set to wake you up five to six hours later. When you wake up, don't go right back to sleep. Instead, do something else, like think about lucid dreaming or read a book, for about an hour. Then go back to bed.

Dr, LaBerge says that his method has a 60% rate of success. Why is this? Basically, you wake in the middle of an REM cycle, so when you return to sleep, you will have a better chance of lucid dreaming.

Cycle Adjustment Technique

This invention of Daniel Love is another way to have lucid dreams. This involves getting up earlier. Get up an hour and a half earlier until you get used to it. After that switch back to your regular time to get up. Keep switching back and forth. This way when you sleep the later time period, you will be likely to lucid dream as your brain is used to awakening earlier.

Wake Initiation of Lucid Dreams or WILD

Let's get back to this method which is described above. To achieve lucid dreaming, the technique is to try to keep mentally aware even as your body relaxes into a sleep state. Think of it this way – you are getting ready to watch a movie; your closed eyelids are like the black screen before the movie begins and you are waiting for the trailers to roll.

Think of ways to keep your mind awake. Count something, keep your mind active. Focus on your breathing and deliberately relax every muscle in your body. This is a self hypnosis technique. Do not do this when you are too tired as you will have much more trouble keeping your mind active.

In recent years, the advance of technology has brought us new devices to help us dream lucidly. These include strobe lights, dreaming masks, and other gadgets thought to assist with lucid dreaming.

Listen to binaural beats with headphones; this is a very effective way to achieve a lucid dream.

The purpose is to synchronize both sides of the brain to create the REM frequency that is required for lucid dreaming.

With self affirmations and self hypnosis combined with binaural sound, being a lucid dreamer is a goal which anyone can reach.
