Dreams And How To Approach Lucid Dreaming


If you want to know how to condition yourself to be a lucid dreamer, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s look at how this can be accomplished.

Why do you want to be a lucid dreamer? How will it help you? To understand the rewards of this type of dreaming better, let’s look at common sleep experiences.

Normally, you lay down and you're out for six to eight hours. Maybe you remember your dreams, maybe not. The usual – not all that interesting, really.

Normal sleep is just a method of refreshing ourselves for the busyness of the next day. However, it could be a lot more interesting if you could control the period of time in which you're dreaming.

What if you could be an active instead of passive participant in your dreams? What if you could take control of your dream instead of being controlled by it? Someone who has managed to become a lucid dreamer can do all of this – they are not bound by anything except for their imagination.

If you want to become a lucid dreamer, how do you manage it? There are two main ways. The first is what's called a dream initiated lucid dream, or DILD. That's when the dreamer realizes they're dreaming in the middle of a dream, restoring their consciousness without leaving the dreaming state itself.

The next way is called wake initiated lucid dream (WILD); in this process, you go from wake to sleep stage with no loss of consciousness. To put it more simply you walk through the door from here to your dreams instead of just happening upon them

So how are these types of lucid dreaming induced?

Remember your dreams.

Remembering your dreams is the first step; this is known as dream recall. It will help you to realize when you are in a dream because we often have the same dreams and see the same or similar objects in our dreams. This is one of the best ways to learn the art of lucid dreaming.

A dream journal is perhaps the best way to learn this skill. Use this to write down every detail of your dream that you can remember immediately after you wake. If you wait., it will become increasingly difficult to recall.

Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD)

Dr Steven LaBerge is a leading scientist who studies lucid dreaming. He was the founder of MILD. This method involves telling yourself you will remember your dreams or perhaps an object in the dream. When you see the object while dreaming it will trigger your mind into knowing you are in a dream.

Wake-Back-to-Bed (WBTB)

Go to sleep as usual but only for five or six hours, set your alarm if need be. When you wake up from this, don’t go back to bed; instead occupy yourself with something to keep you awake. Think about lucid dreaming or watch some TV. After about an hour go back to sleep

The creator of this, Stephen LaBerge believes it has a success rate of sixty percent because you awoke during REM sleep which is the time when you are dreaming. It is like informing your brain that you want to be aware of your dreaming, to have lucid dreams.

Cycle Adjustment Technique

Developed by Daniel Love, in this technique you first acclimate yourself to waking 90 minutes earlier than usual. Then alternate waking early with waking at your usual time. When you wake up at the later (regular) time, your body will begin to stir 90 minutes earlier, giving you a much better chance at achieving a state of lucid dreaming, at least during this 90 minutes.

Wake-initiation of Lucid Dreams (WILD)

This technique involves maintaining mental alertness even as your body shuts down for sleep. Think of it as if you are in a movies theater, with the film soon to begin; your closed eyelids are like the black screen just before the movie starts.

Think of ways to keep your mind awake. Count something, keep your mind active. Focus on your breathing and deliberately relax every muscle in your body. This is a self hypnosis technique. Do not do this when you are too tired as you will have much more trouble keeping your mind active.

In recent years, the advance of technology has brought us new devices to help us dream lucidly. These include strobe lights, dreaming masks, and other gadgets thought to assist with lucid dreaming.

One of the easiest, most reliable methods to induce lucid dreaming is by listening to binaural beats and special sound frequencies through headphones.

These sounds naturally change your brainwaves and cause you to go into REM sleep quickly and easily. You will also still be aware so it will be a lucid dream.

Put all or many of these techniques together and you are ready to begin your journey into the wonderful world of lucid dreaming. It is a simple process that anyone can do.
