The Science Of Regular Dream Control
While most people sleep they dream (mini moves) and as mysterious as dreams are, they occur while we are soundly sleeping and without our control, at least it seems that way. Some of these dreams are pleasant while others are disconcerting and not so pleasant. We do know, however, it is possible to make controlling your dreams a reality. And this is achieved by learning about and inducing a state known as lucid dreaming.
What does this term “lucid dreaming” really mean and in what way does it happen, and what are the benefits to this? Are people really able to obtain control, and make their nightly travels in the dreaming arena into an ongoing, never ending adventure? Stay tuned to this article for your answers of these often asked questions on the topic of controlling dreams.
Dream Control, what is it?
When we use lucid dreaming, we can use the ability of dream control. Lucid dreaming begins with the awareness that you are dreaming while you are in the middle of a dream. Once you know that you are actually dreaming, you can start deciding how the events of your dream will unfold.
Those who suffer from nightmares, especially recurring ones can get relief from these bad dreams by using dream control. Once they have learned this simple but powerful skill, these people can finally get the good night’s rest they so badly need.
The Common Methods of Achieving Lucid Dreaming are:
A very successful way to reach lucid dreaming uses binaural audio, with this you listen to 2 different types of frequencies simultaneously, for the purpose of altering the brain waves, to bring on a relaxed stage, and also the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, which is where the lucid dreaming occurs.
Before it was possible to find CD and DVDs of binaural audio, the primary methods used to induce lucid dreaming were self-hypnosis and meditation. While these both work very well, it takes time to develop these abilities far enough to reliably gain dream control.
Additionally these methods were followed by other techniques that were developed during the following years by experts in both phychology and science. Initially, regardless of the method used, the basic purpose was to train the mind during sleep to be aware that it was dreaming.
This training will begin, of course while you are wide awake. You need to set a cue for yourself – an action which you will perform or a certain thing which you will say that will be your reminder that you are dreaming so that you can begin using dream control.
You can tell yourself that you will do or say a certain thing in your dream to remind yourself and begin lucid dreaming as you start to fall asleep. Once you do or say this cue, you will come to the awareness that you are dreaming and begin to have a lucid dream.
Known as MILD (mnemonic induction of lucid dreaming) this technique was developed by Dr. Stephen LaBerge and it has allowed many thousands of people to begin lucid dreaming and using dream control to rid themselves of recurring nightmares and achieve a feeling of empowerment.
Keeping a dream diary is a good way to train yourself to use dream control. Keep a notebook and pen by your bedside so that when you awake from a dream you can write down anything and everything which you remember. After keeping your dream journal for a few week, you may find yourself having a dream which you have written down over again – except this time, you’ll be in the director’s chair for the experience!
Chase away the bad guys in nightmares, travel to whatever location you desire, go to your imagined hideaways, talk to famous people if you want, and basically be unshackled by worldly concerns. Through controlling your dreams, you can accomplish this, it gives you the ability to be in control of your nightly dream world and all that happens there.
However, keep in mind that you can have too much of a good thing, even dream control. Experts in the field have said that our dreams can be a way of our subconscious minds trying to tell us something important. It’s important to give yourself a few nights off from lucid dreaming now and then, as amazing of an experience as discovering dream control can be.
