Dream Control - A Brief Overview
While most people sleep they dream (mini moves) and as mysterious as dreams are, they occur while we are soundly sleeping and without our control, at least it seems that way. Some of these dreams are pleasant while others are disconcerting and not so pleasant. We do know, however, it is possible to make controlling your dreams a reality. And this is achieved by learning about and inducing a state known as lucid dreaming.
But is this actually real or is the reality of dream control just a myth? It it really is true then what are the benefits of it? And can anyone really achieve this state of being able to control everything that happens when you are dreaming?
Dream Control, what is it?
By using lucid dreaming, to control your dreams, it is a means to be fully aware of dreaming and that you will be able, while dreaming, to control what happens during these dreams. When completely asleep you will be aware that you are dreaming and solely in control of the dream and the outcome of that dream.
For the nightmare sufferers of the world, this can help them find a cure, and back to being able to sleep nice and sound again, and back to having pleasant dreams.
Common Ways of Inducing Lucid Dreaming
One of the most effective ways of inducing lucid dreaming is also one of the newest – binaural audio. This is a technology which involves listening to two different frequencies at the same time. This listening produces deep relaxation and allows your brainwaves to synchronize, leading to the REM sleep state necessary for lucid dreaming to occur.
Self-hypnosis and meditation were the methods used to induce lucid dreaming before binaural audio recordings became available on DVD and CD formats. Self hypnosis and meditation both work to achieve lucid dreaming, but they can take a while to master, making them not necessarily the best choice if you’d like to start lucid dreaming sooner rather than later.
There are a number of other techniques which have been used by experts to help people achieve dream control. All of these techniques work towards the goal of training the mind to understand that they are dreaming so that they can enter a state of lucid dreaming.
This all starts while we are fully conscious, you have to have a key to use, as far as what to say or do, while you are dreaming, and that signals your brain that you are dreaming, and then permits you to control the rest of the dream.
You do this by just stating to yourself, before falling asleep, that very soon you will be in the middle of dreaming, and in a dream you are going to say a word or phrase, or act in a specific manner, that will let you know that you are in a dream.
Known as MILD (mnemonic induction of lucid dreaming) this technique was developed by Dr. Stephen LaBerge and it has allowed many thousands of people to begin lucid dreaming and using dream control to rid themselves of recurring nightmares and achieve a feeling of empowerment.
There are other means of accomplishing lucid dreaming and one would be to keep a journal or a dream diary, in which to record your dreams. By keeping this notebook (and a pen or pencil) nearby on the table by your bed you will be able to write down what you remember about the dream right after you wake up, when it is fresh in your mind. Do this for several nights and soon you will remember what you wrote and you will have a similar dream and then you will be able to control your dream and the activities in that dream.
Chase away the bad guys in nightmares, travel to whatever location you desire, go to your imagined hideaways, talk to famous people if you want, and basically be unshackled by worldly concerns. Through controlling your dreams, you can accomplish this, it gives you the ability to be in control of your nightly dream world and all that happens there.
Experts warn though, that the one danger to lucid dreaming, is doing it too often can have adverse effects. The central reason being that dreaming naturally often informs us of critical things we would otherwise not know. Go ahead and have fun with lucid dreaming. It truly is an interesting experience, but always also let yourself have some times when you just dream regularly!
